The Carolina Pine Quilters invites the public to join its members for a series of special programs celebrating the textile arts of Japan and Indonesia. Designer June Colburn brings the magic and mystique of Asian imagery to quilters, sewers, surface design artists, decorators and fans around the world. Her designs speak of her love and respect for the ancient cultures of the East that developed rich symbolic traditions to describe the wonders of earth and sky. From the lively grace of colorful koi to the whisper of wind in a stand of swaying bamboo, many of June's motifs celebrate the bounty and beauty of life on earth. Others, such as the powerful dragon express an age-old awe for forces in the universe beyond human understanding.The Kimono Culture of Japan:
A trunk show by June Colburn featuring three types of formal silk kimono, each example showcasing extraordinary design artistry and suggesting ways to translate that aesthetic into quilts.

Shishu—Japanese Silk Embroidery from 1920’s-1930’s:
Feast your eyes on June Colburn’s museum-quality collection of silk embroidered silk obi from the Taisho era. Learn about the motifs, techniques, and colors that bring these masterpieces to life.

Batik—Textile Treasures of Bali:
Indigo, tree bark and wax—three simple elements that made batik famous around the world. Visit Bali through their textiles and June Colburn’s quilts and clothing. A morning of history, culture, and some surprises.

Muriel Pfaff presents voices of the past set in colonial South Carolina and portrays the story of indigo as seen through the eyes of Eliza Pickney.
Muriel Pfaff, also known as The Quilt Teacher, lives in Marietta, Georgia, where she teaches a wide variety of quilting classes at quilt shops all around the Atlanta area. She travels throughout the Southeast conducting quilting workshops, and lecturing for quilt guilds and other groups interested in famous women in history, Besides historical information, her lecture programs include authentic reproduction costumes, food samples from the era, and a trunk show of quilts.

Chris Eichner will talk about thread painting techniques including thread choice, needle selection, how to stabiize fabric, and free motion stitching.
Chris Eichner has been teaching thread painting since 2008. Winning awards for her art quilts which are mainly landscapes and still life. She has also taught workshops at John C Campbell Folk School, North Carolina Quilt Symposiums, on cruise ship Royal Caribbean, quilt shops and quilt guilds. A day without thread painting is a like a day without sunshine, she loves teaching and has recently begun painting on fabric then teaching free motion embroidery techniques embellishing the subject.
She recently decided to create commissioned pieces and sell her art.

Aiken resident, Nancy Teal, presents a trunk show of her antique quilt collection including vintage quilts from the 1800 and 1900's. Nancy's collection began with purchases at farm sales in Iowa and Illinois beginning in the mid 1970's and continued to grow for the following 40 years. As the years evolved additional quilts were acquired from quilt dealers in the midwest.

The program will revolve around our quilt show. Pictures of the quilts that have won special awards or first place in their category will be on each table. Winners of these awards are asked to speak briefly, telling us something we don’t already know about their quilt. We hope to see you there!

Be sure to put Monday, December 9, on your calendar because you won’t want to miss the annual CPQ holiday celebration! Details were discussed at the September meeting and include:- A holiday food table with finger foods of both sweet and savory treats, veggies, fruit, cheese/crackers, etc. Sign-up sheets will be available in November. The guild will provide beverages, paper products and door prizes. Due to limited space we will not be able to accommodate crockpots or electrical devices.
- Members also agreed to a gift exchange of a small hand-made item, such as a mug-rug, pin cushion, placemat, needle keeper, or holiday ornament. Be creative! Please SIGN and WRAP your gift item.
- We would love to have all members participate in the gift exchange as this is such a wonderful expression of friendship with fellow quilters. Questions and suggestions should be directed to Peggy Hazell, Hospitality.

April 9 | The Magic of Free Motion Quilting Workshop
Workshop by by Nancy Sapin, certified Sulky instructor.
Learn various free motion techniques/handwork/appliqué using Sulky threads.
Also included are handwork options and Sulky Solvy Turned Appliqué.

Chris Eichner will conduct a workshop on how to create a mosaic art quilt using tiny pieces of shredded fabric cut with a rotary blade and placed according to a photo; the simpler the scene the better. Quilting (free motion) thru all 3 layers will be done to hold in place and then embellished with embroidery threads for added dimension and texture if time allows.Chris Eichner has been teaching thread painting since 2008.
